Recycling at Fiesta

Recycling at Fiesta

Each year at Fiesta, The Solid Waste Department provides recycling at the Battle of the Flowers and Fiesta Flambeau parades. We have many stations along the parade routes.

We distribute bags into the stands and when people fill them up with recyclable bottles and cans, they bring them to a station and get one of our Fiesta medals free!

So next Fiesta, organize your class, troupe, team, neighbors and clubs to turn out at the parades, look for our stations and start earning medals.

Spurs® Activities

Spurs® Activities

During the regular basketball season, the SPURS are kind enough to give our Outreach program tickets to home games and other promotions. Sometimes we get tickets to the SAFC games, too.

We like to use these as prizes for students who participate in our recycling contests. One year, there was a recycling t-shirt design contest. Another year we sponsored an upcycling contest.

What will it be next year? Check back here at the start of the next season for the new contest and rules. Your whole family could be going to a SPURS game!

Apprenticeship Programs

Apprenticeship Programs

Would you like to drive a $350,000 ride?

Having a CDL license is one of the most competitive professions in the nation and also here in San Antonio. In our apprenticeship program, we will pay you to earn one. Starting as a temporary employee, you will receive paid on the job training on how to maneuver our fleet of trucks.

Once you complete the training and pass the examination, you will be eligible to apply for permanent employment with the Solid Waste Department as a driver. And unlike long-haul truckers, you will be home with your family every night.

The basic qualifications are a high school degree or GED equivalent and a class C driver’s license. The program is open to men and women.

Internships

Internship Program

For High School students interested in all aspects of working in a municipality and public administration, the City has a very exciting internship program. Many Departments, including Solid Waste, offer opportunities to experience what it takes to run the seventh largest city in America. The internships are unpaid but may count as college credit depending on pre-approval by the student's college or university. Even college graduates should consider internships as an excellent way to build a resume, make connections and be considered for permanent employment. The skills you will learn can be applied at any city or town in the US.

Capstone Projects

Capstone Projects

For college-bound High School students, the university application process is highly competitive. Beyond your grades showing extra curricular activity is an excellent way to stand out.

Through our Eco Scholars program, you can select an activity that will be presented to the City of San Antonio. It can be a research project, training in environmental sciences, emersion into a City Department’s operations, or your own unique idea around the environment, climate or other areas of sustainability.

When your project is completed and submitted, it will be evaluated by the Solid Waste Department. Those that are judged to be excellent will receive a letter of recommendation from the Director of Solid Waste, Mr. David Newman. The Eco Scholar program is not easy, but that is why it has merit.

Your Capstone project may even get published in the Department’s annual report to the Mayor, City Council and the City Manager.
